It may be 65 years since their stars began to rise, but fascination with The Beatles shows no sign of fading. Their songs are still being discovered by new audiences. There’s been documentary after documentary on The Fab Four. And soon, there’ll be not one, but four films about their lives.
The films are in production now, so there’s a while to wait until they hit the big screen. Here, we’ll take you through everything we know so far. We’ll share the who, where, what and when details of this epic four-film cinematic event on The Beatles.
Is a Beatles biopic coming out?
Yes, a biopic of The Beatles is coming out. But it’s bigger than that. It’s not a single film being made. We’re expecting The Beatles a four-film cinematic event. Each one of The Fab Four will have their time in the spotlight. Each film will be from one band member’s point of view. Interesting concept isn’t it.
Who’s behind the biopic? None other than Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes of Spectre, American Beauty and 1917 fame. The screenplays will be co-written by the highly-respected Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne. The details were announced at a Sony Pictures launch event in Las Vegas in March 2025.
It’s a big deal. It’s the first time that the stars have aligned and the rights have been approved to tell these stories. Apple Corps (The Beatles label) and The Beatles fully support the films and have granted full life-story and music rights. Ringo Starr tweeted to declare that the films had his backing as well as that of the families of all members of The Beatles.
“Have you heard the news? Oh boy. We all support the Sam Mendes movie project. Yes, indeed. peace and love.”
The films will be produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Neal Street Productions and Apple Corps. They’re due to hit the big screen in April 2028.
The idea of releasing four linked films simultaneously is pioneering and unprecedented. Sam Mendes described the films as the “first bingeable theatrical experience.” It’s an innovative, big play for Mendes, so don’t expect it to follow conventional strategies.
Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter, “You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy. There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”

Where do we know the four Beatles actors from?
Paul Mescal we know from recent box office smashes including Gladiator II and Hamnet. But he first rose to fame in the beautiful BBC drama, Normal People. Joseph Quinn starred with Paul Mescal in Gladiator II. He was also in the TV sensation that is Stranger Things. Harris Dickinson starred in Babygirl alongside Nicole Kidman. He was also in The King’s Man. You may recognise Barry Keoghan from the brilliant Irish film, The Banshees of Inisherin and the smash hit Saltburn.
Where are the filming locations for The Beatles biopic?
Filming’s underway at the moment, so many filming locations are still being kept under wraps. Sam Mendes has chosen to shoot the film at Bovingdon Airfield Studios in Hertfordshire (just outside London). That’s where he filmed 1917 too.
One of the most iconic Beatles locations is Abbey Road in North London. It was home to the flagship studio of EMI’s record empire in the 60s and featured on their 1969 album cover. People stop the traffic daily to pose on that famous zebra crossing. You’d expect filming to take place there. But rumour has it that isn’t the case. Apparently, Westminster council’s not allowing filming at Abbey Road as it would disrupt the traffic (according to Far Out).

There have been unconfirmed social media reports of filming in London. Yellow taxi cabs were spotted. It’s thought these scenes were recreating the band arriving in New York for The Ed Sullivan Show.
In January 2026 Sony Pictures released clues in the form of a series of postcards that were dotted around the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. They showed the four main characters as well as some iconic Beatles locations. That included John Lennon’s childhood home, The Beatles statue and The Cavern Club in Liverpool. Beyond London and Liverpool, there were also clubs in Hamburg, Strawberry Fields in Central Park and locations in Tokyo.
