On the Trail of the Spies
Hampstead Spies – the Atomic Secrets
“the two biggest spy scandals in British history both started in Hampstead”
Atomic Secrets – guided by former ITN Editor Stewart Purvis CBE (see below) – is our newest Spies Walk. There are over 500 London Walks. This is the only one of the 500+ London Walks that has been researched worldwide. Stewart’s researches took our man (“one of the architects of modern television news”) to the National Archives in London, to Los Alamos in New Mexico, and to Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Stewart’s discovered how two KGB spies recruited in Hampstead worked within the American-British bomb project. The photograph shows the Nagasaki clock that froze at the time – 11:02 on the 9th of August 1945 – when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city.
