Uxbridge tube station, London
Guided by Canal Guides
Uxbridge was once – and for centuries – a thriving market town on the road from London to Oxford, that past attested to by its 16th-century coaching inn and 18th-century market hall.
Another chunk of history we see on this Walk is a place where peace was very nearly achieved in the middle of the English Civil Wa. Once again, a pub name tells all – the “Crown and Treaty.” As we start along the Grand Union Canal, there is a reminder of the centuries when Uxbridge was a centre of corn and corn milling. King’s Mill gave its name to the Kingsmill loaves one sees in most English supermarkets today. And an attractive stretch of the Colne Valley Regional Park includes some of the River Misbourne, a chalk stream remembered for trout and watercress.
Denham Village is just what one might imagine a classic English village should look like. No surprise that it has been a filming location. The 15th-century church, ancient timber-framed houses, not quite so ancient 17th– and 18th-century houses – it’s a gem.
The meeting point is just outside the High Street exit of Uxbridge Tube Stop.
If you can’t make one of the regularly scheduled, just-turn-up, The Grand Union Canal – Uxbridge to Denham it can always be booked as a private tour. If you go private you can have the The Grand Union Canal – Uxbridge to Denham walk – or any other London Walk – on a day and at a time that suits your convenience. We’ll tailor it to your requirements. Ring Fiona or Mary on 020 7624 3978 or email us at [email protected] and we’ll set it up and make it happen for you. A private London Walk – they’re good value for an individual or couple and sensational value for a group – makes an ideal group or educational or birthday party or office (team-building) or club outing.
A private London Walk makes a fab gift – be it a birthday or anniversary or Christmas present or whatever. Merchandise schmerchandise (gift wrapped or not) – but giving someone an experience, now that’s special. Memories make us rich.
