To start the weekend, the perfect London Walk…Yes, perfect. Here’s why: 1) Greenwich is its own universe – its own universe just a snap of a finger from central London. 2) in Greenwich you step into a trompe-l’oeil picture, a Canaletto scene of order and majesty.
3) The walk decodes Greenwich. 4) To go on this walk is to feast on Greenwich’s secrets – tiny particulars you’d otherwise miss. A horse’s tail, a hidden hand…
a tell-tale furrow in the terrain, a crushed king, the world’s most expensive apology, Saint Preposterous, clocks that saved thousands of lives, a save-you-a-tenner secret place to bestride both hemispheres, a flutter of fans, the ‘X’ factor which graces works of genius. 5) The Greenwich walk is the overture to London’s most sensational “day out.”
Riverside pub lunch. The beer Nelson’s old salts drank. His Trafalgar uniform, with the bullet hole. Flea market. Observatory. Cutty Sark. Cream tea. The unique trifecta: down Greenwich way people walk under the Thames, sail across it, fly* over it. N.B. the walk ends in Greenwich, just a couple of minutes away from Greenwich’s superb and blazingly quick transport links back into central London. *That’s right, there it is – in the distance – the gondola in the sky. The Cable Car! Guided by Ann or Isobel, Fiona or Jan
GREENWICH WALK – THE PRACTICALS
The meeting point is outside Tower Hill Station. Meet just outside the Exit, by the Tower Hill Tram Coffee Stand. Here’s a photo of the meeting point.
We form up by the Tower Hill Tram Refreshment Stand and make our way past the Tower of London down to the river. The guide normally does a bit of guiding on the way down to the Thames. At the pier, we board the boat for our voyage down to Greenwich. N.B. the walk ends at 1.15 pm in Greenwich Church Street, opposite St. Alfege church. From there it’s a five-minute walk to public transport. Getting back to central London is quick and eezy peezy. You’re spoiled for choice: DLR (Cutty Sark Station), boat from Greenwich Pier or the 188 bus. Quickest right into the heart of central London is the DLR – it’s 19 minutes from Cutty Sark Station to Bank Tube.

London Walks has an excellent reputation. Ann’s tour of Greenwich was another example of why they have this reputation. She combined knowledge, humor, and personality to give a memorable learning experience. Her excellent tour also showed me how much more there is to see in Greenwich. Ann also offers “foody” tours. It’s on my list of things to do when I’m next in London.

Interesting ask and my companion was very much impressed. Only drawback was a flock of very loud teenage students of the boat nattering away the entire ride. It totally drowned out the narration of the crew. Not the fault of the guide but still irritating.
Other than that, very informative and entertaining walk. Thank you Ann

This was another great walk from London Walks. Ann is really knowledgeable about Greenwich and makes it a fascinating tour of a part of London I know a bit but not well. She gave a good overview of the history of the area as well as lots about the Old Royal Naval College. She also dealt well with the logistics of getting us all from the start point and to the point even though some people were late arrivals.

I had wanted to see Greenwich for a long time. We were fortunate to have Ann as our guide. The approach by boat was perfect. Ann presents a wonderful tour with information to bring the past alive. Getting back to London’s center after the tour was easy.

The details and stories that Anne told made Greenwich come alive. We particularly liked the story about The Powder of Sympathy and how dogs could used for determining longitude.

I’ve gone on dozens of London Walks through the decades and the trip to Greenwich made for a lovely excursion away from the city center. Ann was an erudite guide who provided much insight. I recommend making a complete day of it and spending time in Greenwich afterwards visiting the interiors of the places Ann has talked about.

Hi
Last week we had a tour with Ann. Greenwich itself is not very interesting. We did not see the expected Meridian line, just a small extension of it; no drama. The history was presented well, though Ann gets irritable at questions, esp. when interrupted. Also, her voice does not carry well, even in a small group, so one had to strain to hear what she was saying. So, the 3.5 hours, which includes getting to and returning from the tour, would have been better spent elsewhere.

Sadly London Walks are not for us. We are over 75 and felt they were London Runs! We went on three, the subject matter was interesting, the guides were knowledgeable but just were too fast for us and we had to struggle to find them ahead of us.Perhaps you could offer Walks only for those over 70. Or at least suggest they are a little fast for Seniors.
