To start the weekend, the perfect London Walk…Yes, perfect. Here’s why: 1) Greenwich is its own universe – its own universe just a snap of a finger from central London. 2) in Greenwich you step into a trompe-l’oeil picture, a Canaletto scene of order and majesty.

GREENWICH WALK – THE PRACTICALS
The meeting point is outside Tower Hill Station. Meet just outside the Exit, by the Tower Hill Tram Coffee Stand. Here’s a photo of the meeting point.
We form up by the Tower Hill Tram Refreshment Stand and make our way past the Tower of London down to the river. The guide normally does a bit of guiding on the way down to the Thames. At the pier, we board the boat for our voyage down to Greenwich. N.B. the walk ends at 1.15 pm in Greenwich Church Street, opposite St. Alfege church. From there it’s a five-minute walk to public transport. Getting back to central London is quick and eezy peezy. You’re spoiled for choice: DLR (Cutty Sark Station), boat from Greenwich Pier or the 188 bus. Quickest right into the heart of central London is the DLR – it’s 19 minutes from Cutty Sark Station to Bank Tube.

I’ve gone on dozens of London Walks through the decades and the trip to Greenwich made for a lovely excursion away from the city center. Ann was an erudite guide who provided much insight. I recommend making a complete day of it and spending time in Greenwich afterwards visiting the interiors of the places Ann has talked about.

Last week we had a tour with Ann. Greenwich itself is not very interesting. We did not see the expected Meridian line, just a small extension of it; no drama. The history was presented well, though Ann gets irritable at questions, esp. when interrupted. Also, her voice does not carry well, even in a small group, so one had to strain to hear what she was saying. So, the 3.5 hours, which includes getting to and returning from the tour, would have been better spent elsewhere.

Sadly London Walks are not for us. We are over 75 and felt they were London Runs! We went on three, the subject matter was interesting, the guides were knowledgeable but just were too fast for us and we had to struggle to find them ahead of us.Perhaps you could offer Walks only for those over 70. Or at least suggest they are a little fast for Seniors.

Russell was our first tour guide, for our first of 5 London walks. Greenwich was beautiful, uncrowned. We took a river boat from Embankment Pier and easily found Russell waiting outside the Greenwich Maritime Tube Station. I don’t think on your own you could experience this part of London without a guide. Russell lives in Greenwich and truly loved sharing his stories and insights into this grand area.

I’ve been to Greenwich many times and thought I knew all the sights to see. How wrong I was. Isobel took us places I didn’t know about and told fabulous tales from history. I really appreciate Isobel’s depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the topic at hand. Or any other topic. Unlike those “free” walks where the guides rely on reading Blue Plaques for their historical context, Isobel’s expertise is deep and impressive. Blue Badges and London Walks are a winning combo.
