STONEHENGE & SALISBURY

This was possibly the best day of our wonderful two-week visit to London. Our guide, Richard I, did an excellent job of shepherding our group from station to location and back. He simply radiated wit and charm, and his stories were highly memorable.

I love the city so much that I was reluctant to step away from it for even for a day, but it turns out that Salisbury is as fascinating as anywhere I've been in London. And after days of studying maps, getting lost, and retracing our steps, it was great to have a stress-free day in the country. The private coach ride to from Salisbury to the Stonehenge site felt like the height of luxury. I can't recommend this trip too highly.

PS: The cafe in Salisbury Cathedral offers very tasty lunch options--no need to wander back into the village if you don't care to.

I went with my family to Stonehenge & Salisbury. I always wanted to visit Stonehenge and decided that my first trip, on my birthday, should be guided. Our guide Gillian was fabulous, lots of fun and warm. Everybody sung me happy birthday in the coach by the stones! My family loved the way this day trip was structured and vowed to go back again. My little sister (12) was both in awe with Salisbury Cathedral AND of a boy about her age (American?) He was with his parents & brother. They had an exchange of smiles! (my sister says hi). On our way back to London the supermoon of the 19/03/2011 was waiting for us too. LOVELY DAY FOR ALL!!

My friend and I had been looking forward to this walk all week during our last trip to London and it was well worth it. Our guide, Jillian, was lovely and really made the trip for us! She was extremely knowledgeable and had quirky, little stories about sights along the way. I love London Walks and this was another great one to add to the list. Thank you so much for a fantastic day!

I have a question about this tour: How many time should we schedule for the entire trip and getting back to London Waterloo Station?

We only spend 4 days in London but still want to see Stonehenge, so we're wondering what time we'll get back to London.

Thank you!

Hi Lien,

Thanks for your note. In answer to your question...

Our return train is the 17.20 pm. It arrives back in London at 18.45 pm.

The "rule of thumb" with the Here's England - Away We Go! trips is that they're all designed to get you back in central London in time to get to a show or concert (if you're so inclined). So in addition to being fun and fascinating and very affordable they also make for a very efficient use of your time.

The exception that proves the rule is the trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. It's just that bit further so that one doesn't get back until about 8 pm or thereabouts. But with the "later returners", we always flag that up on www.walks.com and indeed on the London Walks leaflet.

Hope this helps.

Bestest,

David

The tariff was 49gbp, not 37gbp as indicated on the Stonehenge webpage. Simon did an excellent job and was friendly and made the tour very entertaining. I was very impressed with LW logistics - The attached picture says it all, regarding timing and opportunity. Thanks LW.

Hi Jay.  David here. Thank you for that stunning photograph - and indeed your gracious comment.  Thought I might just shed a bit of light on the tariff matter. The tariff is in fact 37 gbp. The £12 difference is the guide's fee. As we put it on the Explorer Days page on the website, Explorer Days are unbeatable value: just £12 for adults plus the tariff (your train fare and any entrance fees). We spell out those two costs for you - separate them out from each other - so that people can see exactly what costs what, where their monies are going, what they're getting for what they're paying out, etc. London Walks doesn't play that game of "lumping everything together" in the interests of hiding secret mark-ups, etc.

In August 2009, my family (2 adults, 4 children ages 7-13) took a walking tour to Salisbury/Stonehenge with Richard (aka the red cap guy). Not only was he knowledgeable and organized, but he was also very polite, respectful, and AWESOME! This was the highlight of our European vacation. Thank you, Richard.

We went on this outing on 5/19/09...don't go to Stonehenge unless you go w/ London Walks! Richard was the best & not only did we get to experience Salisbury but Stonehenge experience was the best.

Don't visit unless you go w/ London Walks!

That was a wonderful day. We were looking for an interesting and unusual visit to this site and we had! Salisbury cathedral was a discovery, never heard about it but incredibly gorgeous. And Stonehenge was fascinating, even with the polar wind we had that 1st day of 2009. Thank you Chris for your visit, really great competent and experienced guide. Would advise to everybody that has some time to spend in London and would like to escape one day from the crowd and traffic. Perfect selection.

Me and my 18-year-old nephew loved this tour, given by Chris, in April 2008. It's a highly informative way to spend the day, with lovely glimpses of the countryside during the train & bus ride portions.

Chris is a highly knowledgeable, entertaining, witty guide who made the experience a memorable one.

What surprised our family was that, even though Stonehenge was the reason we went on this tour, even my utterly non-religous nephew felt the Salisbury Cathedral portion was the most rewarding and awe-inspiring.
