What larks! What plunges!

Unexpected, Uncommon, Unforgettable

Hidden in plain sight off the beaten track awaits Bloomsbury. Meander through tree-lined squares and streets built after The Great Fire of London and expect the unexpected at every turn. Cromwell’s ‘ghost’, Nelson’s funeral Director, Longitude, King George III and Peter Pan. Water conduits that once ran with wine, centuries-old canopied houses, the birthplace of the Arts & Crafts movement and the most famous children’s hospital in the world. And writers. Here was aristocratic detective Lord Peter Wimsey, here were Dickens’ child chimney sweeps, here was where poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath married and George Orwell introduced us to Big Brother. And this was Virginia Woolf’s neighbourhood too, close to The British Museum, founded with Chelsea resident Hans Sloane’s collection. ‘London specialises in hiding the best of itself.’ Nowhere more so than in Bloomsbury. As for après walk, perhaps drop in on the British Museum or have a drink at a traditional old pub, many with outside seating.

An excellent walk on a very hot day in late May. I did not know Bloomsbury had so many squares and they provided some welcome shade on this very hot day. I dont think I have been on a walk with so many blue plaques although obviously we did noy have ime to stop at them all. Jan started the walk with a brief potted history of England which proved useful on the walk. Much of the walk is off the tourist trail so we avoided too much background traffic noise. This part of London has lots of students so there are many fairly cheap places to eat and drink after the walk

This was one of the best walking tours I have ever been on. Dr Ann brought the area and some of its notable inhabitants to life with her wit and wealth of knowledge. She told many fascinating stories and added value with her suggestions for further exploration of local museums and places of interest. I could not recommend this tour with Dr Ann more highly.

  3. David Picksley

I’ve been a Londoner for 93 years, before, during, and after the war, and thought I knew it all. On this walk Dr Ann found all my unknown unknowns in the most delightful manner.

I had a wonderful walking tour with Dr Ann. Truly, one of the highlights of my holiday. Dr Ann is knowledgeable, interesting and engaging and she brought the history of Bloomsbury alive with her human stories. Her style was warm and kind, but with depth and intelligence. My big tip – get a waterproof jacket and a good hat and boots and go even if its raining! Really do! The group will be smaller and you may, like me, even have the incredible privilege of a two-hour private tour with Dr Ann for the price of a group tour. Highly recommended.

  5. Liv

Ann was a lovely tour guide, knew so much information, and it was an absolute pleasure! Would book again!

We took this walk with Ann Robinson over the weekend (December 6th) and found her to be a terrific guide. Her knowledge was broad and deep and she told us stories and pointed out sites we never would have found ourselves. The pace was excellent and we would gladly take another walk with her anytime.

  7. Anne Marie

I did this walk with David on Oct 28th. It was great to explore Bloomsbury (including some bits just outside of B.). The walk had a strong literary focus with David reading out poems etc. David even gave us handouts and followed up with additional information after the tour. This is a great company, which I highly recommend.

Having moved to rural Kent, we hadn’t done a London Walk for several years, and had forgotten how good the guides are, and how much there is to see and learn. David was superb. He led the walk at a sensible pace, taking in quiet backstreets we would probably never have thought to explore, explaining the history of the area and of the literary figures who had lived and worked there. His knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, all things literary and poetic seemed to know no bounds. He supplied us all with generous print-outs of material he used or that he thought we would find interesting, and followed up on email with links to other fascinating sources, and suggested further reading. He even introduced us to an eccentric inventor’s ‘arcade’, and architectural features whose significance we would never have guessed. Wholeheartedly recommended.

David is incredibly knowledgeable and hugely entertaining. I enjoyed the walk and as with most of these walks, ended up seeing a few more of London’s hidden areas.

  10. Viv Pyner

Another very enjoyable walk. Dr Ann is very informative and all of us on the walk enjoyed it. She imparted lots of information which was new to me and I will be very happy if I manage to go on another walk guided by her.
