Tom Lehrer. He was one of a kind. As is this walk. It’s a send off – and an act of homage – to the great American satirist of the 50s and 60s. Bad singing will be encouraged as we sing our way around every stop with absolutely no sense of taste or decorum. Which would please Tom no end.
As the New York Times put, “a mathematician by training, [Tom Lehrer] acquired a devoted following with songs that set sardonic lyrics to music that was often maddeningly cheerful.”
“‘There’s never been anyone like him,’ said Sir Cameron Mackontosh, the legendary Broadway producer who created Tom Foolery, a musical revue of Lehrer’s songs, in the ’70s. ‘Of all famous songwriters, he’s probably the only one that, in the great sense of the word, is an amateur in that he never wanted to be professional. And yet the work he did is of the highest quality of any great songwriter.'”
It’s guided by a former London Mayor. It doesn’t come any more bizarre – any more Tom Lehrer – than that.
