No London band inspires devotion in their fans quite like The ‘Orrible ‘Oo. Who fans know that without Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwhistle and Keith Moon, the history of pop and rock is a much less exciting affair.
Pop as art, the birth of rock, rock as culture, rock opera, the seeds of Punk, the importance of a show, of a distinctive look… The Who were in the vanguard of it all, and more.
On bass, John Entwistle did more than any other player of his generation to define an instrument still in its infancy. Keith Moon wrote the blueprint for the role of Rock drummer. Roger Daltrey in his pomp was the very model of a frontman. Pete Townshend, their leader, writer, guitarist and artistic director, pushed the boundaries of the genre.
Side One: Teenage Wasteland
Along the Goldhawk Road to Shepherd’s Bush… we’ll find the roots of The Who. We’ll also find The Mods, the sharpest of all the pop culture tribes. Along the way we’ll take a look at post-war working class life in London. Quadrophenia movie locations, too.
Side Two: Up West
On to Soho where Maximum R&B was born… the famous Marquee Club… The Scene Club… Tommy’s debut… and could that be THE Soho doorway?
Side Three: Dear Boy
In Mayfair we’ll look at the role of Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert as managers and we’ll end on 7th September 1978… the day that Keith Moon died.
And we’ll discuss the mighty music. Loud. Political. Often passionate. Sometimes bombastic. Never, ever boring. It is indeed an Amazing Journey.
Side Four – Bonus Tracks
As with a couple of his other London Music Tours – notably Pink Floyd & David Bowie – Adam will also provide a pre-recorded virtual tour for your own further explorations of places associated with The Who. This will be sent out, along with playlists, clips, reviews and further reading at the end of the tour.
Practicals
In common with a number of Adam’s other London Music Tours we will travel by London Underground to cover as much ground as possible. You will need an Oyster Card/Debit Card/Credit Card/Travelcard for journeys in Zones 1 & 2.
To accommodate the travel time, a 3-hour window has been set aside for the tour. Adam estimates that travel time during the tour should be around 35 minutes. During that time you can chat with your fellow music fans, ask Adam any questions you may have or, if you’d prefer to zone out a little, Adam will provide curated playlists relevant to the tour to pass the time o your headphones/AirPods.
