Q. What could Sting, two leaders of the Labour Party, General de Gaulle, two Spice Girls, Florence Nightingale and Peter Sellers possibly have in common?
A. They all lived in or off the same street in London, though clearly not at the same time.
Inspired by the TV programme ‘A House Through Time’, ‘Frognal – A Hampstead Street through Time’ focuses on the houses in one street and the people who’ve lived in them. Your guide, former TV newsman Stewart Purvis, has done the research on the stories behind the buildings and the residents.
The name of the street ‘Frognal,’ which takes some explaining for starters. The buildings span three centuries and they have been Hampstead homes for an extraordinary range of politicians, classical and pop musicians, actors and actresses. Along the way, an argosy of stories and legends, of personal triumphs and tragedies.
N.B. this is virgin territory Stewart’s blazed a trail through. The “street” in A Street Through Time doesn’t figure in any other Hampstead walk in the London Walks repertory. There’s no overlap whatsoever.
Hampstead Street Through Time takes place at 2.30 pm on Sunday, May 31.
Meet Stewart just outside the exit of Hampstead Tube (Hampstead Tube is on the Edgware branch of the Northern Line). The walk ends at Finchley Road Tube (Jubilee and Metropolitan Lines). If you prefer to walk back to Hampstead Tube afterwards Stewart will guide you past a few more homes of the rich and/or famous.

A private London Walk makes a very special (and unusual) gift – be it a birthday or anniversary or Christmas present or whatever. Merchandise schmerchandise (gift wrapped or not) – but giving someone an experience, now that’s special. Memories make us rich.
