Borough Market Southwark historic Victorian London market street

Short read: Elsewhere is always surprising…

Historic alley near Clink Prison Museum Bankside Southwark London

Especially when elsewhere is the dark side of the moon – the Victorian underside of 21st-century London.

Long read: Here’s how we get there. We poke around in forgotten corners of the real London just over the river. We make some thrilling – and chilling – “finds”. Everything from trace evidence – archaeological fragments – to the whole kit and caboodle. Stuff from the old, furtive, toil-worn, hard-scrabble, soon-to-be-passing, villainous past: a paupers’ burying ground, a ragged school, “model dwellings”, Little Dorrit’s prison, Octavia Hill’s cottages, etc. We see it. And hear the people. Really hear them. Because they speak through the guides: chimney sweeps, prostitutes, the soon-to-be-executed “Black Maria”, pickpockets, street sellers, the Body Snatching Borough Gang, etc. It’s history as a seance. As for lunch after the walk, well these two words will suffice: Borough Market. Guided by Richard III and Karen (winner of the London Tourist Board’s Guide of the Year Award*) and Sue and Jonathan.

  1. Sheree Chase

I attended Sue Jackson Victorian London walk today and it was fantastic! Truly, a highlight of my London visit. The depth of Sue’s knowledge combined with the authentic sights we visited and the stories of individuals really brought a human dimension to the whole experience, so meaningful. As a museum professional who spent my carer developing interpretive walking tours I can say wholeheartedly that this was an exceptional experience for me. Many thanks to London Walks for all of the wonderful tours I attended during my stay in London. I would recommend Sue for this tour. I would also highly recommend Tom and his exceptional Famous Square Mile and Tim for a delightful walk on the Ahoy Mayflower and the docks tour. Mahalo nui loa, Sheree Chase, Kona, Hawaii

  2. Andrew Benator

Loved the walk! Sue is a great guide and very knowledgeable. She stuck around with us for several minutes after the tour, chatting and sharing stories about the area.

  3. Steffen

Fantastic walk. We had done a couple of other tours with London walks . This one was also impressive and funny. Richard (the third as he calls himself) was a fantastic tour guide: so full of passion and knowledge and a great sense of humor. As non-native English speakers we could follow Richard very well.

Definitely recommend you do this walk. Even if you have already done the “hidden London” walk with the company this one is recommended as it covers totally different things (despite same starting point in the city).

  4. SARAH SMITH

Catherine excellent, very knowledgeable and throughly enjoyed the tour. Found out so much about Victorian times I never knew.
    Would recommend

  5. Christine

Richard ( the third) was knowledgeable and entertaining. The Tour was very interesting.

  6. ashley krotosky

(from 26.1.26) -Catherine was excellent: highly informative, entertaining and pitched at just the right level.
Just as importantly she made a great impression as a very dedicated and congenial person.

  7. Peter Butler

Spent a very pleasant two hours with Catherine, who was engaging, knowledgeable, and extremely patient when answering a flurry of naive and unintelligent questions – all of which came from me… Highly recommended

  8. Louise Ashton

Loved the walk with Sue, who made the whole experience so interesting and enjoyable. She was a fount of knowledge on all things even vaguely related to Victorian London and we learnt a lot in the best way possible. Hope to bring my husband next time!

  9. Rachel Vanzwam

Karen was an energetic superstar! It can be hard to picture the dirty history of London when you’re looking at the modern glass and steel buildings but Karen took us on a journey with her expert storytelling showmanship that made it easy to imagine the past.

  10. Davina

Thanks to Richard III for an excellent, informative and well delivered London walk (darkest Victorian London). He even organised a beautiful sunny day! Thoroughly recommend
