‘Tis “The Season…”
It’s late autumn. Affluent neighbourhoods of Georgian London fill out as the aristocracy return from their country estates. The monarch settles back in, Parliament re-opens and the London Season begins.
Come on this walk to live the streets of St James’s and Mayfair at the heart of this social whirl. Some of the palatial villas still stand as does the parish church where the wealthy paid good money for their own pew. Shops survive still supplying the wines, the pomades, the fashions they sought after. Even clubs where family fortunes were won and lost hold sway today. It may start you wondering just how much has disappeared.
However it takes you, this is a chance to get up close to a lifestyle that’s often mythologized but rarely examined as we will be doing here, not forgetting the army of shopkeepers, footmen and grooms needed to make it happen.
