The First Brexit – Henry VIII votes to leave the original EU

Barbican Underground station, London

Guided by Jane

Bewildered by the political upheavals since the UK voted to leave the EU?  You’re not alone. So take a break with us on a jaunt that reminds us that we’ve seen it all before. In the 16th century ‘referendum’ to leave the pan-European ‘Ecclesiastical Union’ only one man had a vote  – King Henry VIII.  In the fall-out more than fingers got burned and heads really did roll for in Tudor times being ‘for the chop’ was not just a figure of speech.  On our walk we meet all the A list celebs from our History books, from Bloody Mary and Mary Queen of Scots through to William Shakespeare and we  visit the very sites where the most inventive methods of capturing hearts and minds were carried out, such as nailing a Prior’s arm to the gateway of his own Priory.  We hear of those ‘put to the question’ on the rack and about fiendish plots to subvert the status quo. Given the popular saying that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, let’s explore together the ramifications of Henry VIII’s original Brexit. Guided by top flight Blue Badge Guide Jane.*
