The fascinating story of London’s canals is here – everything from the reason for building them to the lives of the boat crews and the cargoes the boats carried.

The museum building itself was once a customer of the canal – an ice warehouse. And its owner, Carlo Gatti, was also a pioneer of ice cream in London. The displays in the museum include the story of the ice trade in London and the story of ice cream making – and they are sometimes supported by ice-cream making demonstrations, using original recipes.

 To get there, we walk along the Regent’s Canal towpath, visiting the Granary building.

Today it’s the campus of the University of the Arts London, and home to Central St. Martin’s – the heart of the fashion world !

But the name tells a story – it started life as the transshipment hub for grain cargoes being loaded into Regent’s Canal barges.
