The 2024/25 Schedule

October 2024

Monday 28th October 7.30pm (1930) GMT

Record Shops

The Monday Night Music History Club launches with a record shop/record store special… do you remember the first time? Did a parent or elder sibling take you to your first record shop? Were you spending a Record Token? Your pocket money?

Did you know that when Morrissey stated that he “was looking for a job and then he found a job/And heaven knows I’m miserable now” the job was in a record shop? Or that R.E.M’s Peter Buck met Mick Mills working a record store?

We’ll look at the history of the HMV store on London’s Oxford Street; we’ll also find the location of the first jazz record store in the UK.

And we’ll point you in the direction of the best record stores in London today. Any suggestions? Bring along stories of you’re favourites and we’ll compile a database and map of the very best

Reading & Listening

Every month on the Monday Night Music History Club we’ll zoom-in on a record and/or book and /or film related to our theme.

This month we’ll look at Nick Hornby’s novel High Fidelity and the John Cusack movie of the book

You may like to read/watch Hi Fidelity – but it’s NOT compulsory (no homework!). We’ll take care to discuss the story with no spoilers!

November

Monday 25th November 7.30pm (1930) GMT

Spooky Radio Nite

The Devil, so they say, has all the best tunes… and in November’s Monday Night Music History Club we’ll join hands and contact the links between music and the occult.

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page will naturally take centre stage. We’ll look at the macabre prelude to Summer of Love here in London with legendary indy record producer and electronica pioneer Joe Meek’s death in 1967. And we’ll explore all points of the pentangle from Richard Strauss’ Salome to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The idea for this instalment of the Monday Night Music History Club grew out of a listening party that Adam hosted on Twitter way back in 2016. It then became one of my first pandemic live events on Facebook and has even gone out as a walking tour.
