It’s one of the greenest, leafiest, most unexpectedly beautiful corners of central London.
This walk explores the astonishing transformation of King’s Cross into a landscape of gardens, water, wildlife and hidden urban nature. More than 40% of the redevelopment area is green space – an extraordinary statistic when you realise we’re standing in the very heart of inner London.
We’ll discover ancient churchyards and secret gardens. Floating reed beds and flowering houseboats. Quiet waterside corners alive with birdsong. Community gardens tucked into unexpected places. A natural park where it’s possible to forget you’re in Zone 1 altogether.

There are geese gliding along the canal, fountains dancing in the squares, children splashing in the water on hot days, and greenery threaded everywhere through the old industrial landscape.
One moment you’re standing among sleek new architecture and tech campuses. The next you’re beside wildflowers growing where coal wagons once rattled through the soot and steam.
And what a story this area tells.
For nearly two centuries King’s Cross was one of London’s great transport powerhouses – canals, railways and roads all converging here. Then came decline. Dereliction. Vast abandoned yards and crumbling warehouses.
Today it has been reborn as one of Europe’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects – and remarkably, nature has been invited back in.

We had a fantastic private walking tour of King’s Cross with Dr. Anne. Despite working in the area ourselves, we were amazed by how much history, architecture, and hidden detail we had never noticed before.

went on this walk yesterday with Dr Ann. What an interesting walk. Who knew there was so much wonderful green places to walk around. You find it hard to realise that you are in the heart of the city as it is all so peaceful and calming. The development of this huge area has been extremely well designed and developed with nature and wildlife in mind as well as providing lovely green areas for the various communities that are within this development. Dr Ann was a great leader as she is so knowledgeable about the history of the area, and so enthusiastic about telling us all about it. The pond with the baby coots was wonderful and it was wonderful to see the oldest church built in AD318 in Pancras. One of the best walks I have been on. Mind you they are all excellent!
