George Orwell may be the most influential writer of the twentieth century still shaping how we think today. A critic needs only call something “Orwellian” and it is instantly suspect. Big Brother, doublethink and Newspeak have slipped from the pages of fiction into everyday language, shorthand for power abused and truth bent out of shape.
But who was Orwell really?
An Eton-educated essayist who loathed privilege. A former officer in the much-hated British colonial police in Burma. A volunteer who went to Spain, signed up with anarchists, and was shot in the throat fighting fascism. A man of the left whose bleak masterpiece, 1984, was admired by Winston Churchill and distrusted by many of Orwell’s own comrades.
Why did he despise London, yet write so fiercely about it? Why did he retreat to a remote Scottish island, hard to reach even in 2025, to write his darkest vision of the modern world?

saw this brand new walk by chance ( 9th January ) and since hubby was reading some of the essays we decided to attend. Very glad we did. Enjoyed ourselves very much. David P was our guide and needless to say very knowledgeable not just about Orwell but London in general. He encouraged comments and conversation.Great group of people, local and from further afield and including two members of the Orwell Society who were able to add their knowledge.
