Trafalgar Square is the epicentre of a capital city. It outscores anywhere for national icons – from Nelson’s column and Admiralty Arch to the National Gallery and fourth plinth. That’s just the surface, It’s a peoples’ square in the seat of power – a mix that has generated a fascinating and unpredictable history.
Trafalgar Square collage featuring Nelson’s statue, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Christmas tree, the Fourth Plinth sculpture, a blue mermaid and a golden mythical creature.

Trafalgar Square. One famous London landmark. Centuries of history, art, symbolism and surprises hiding in plain sight.

What about the Christmas tree and festivals of faith, the celebrations of peace,  the fountains of new year? There’s art accessible to all in the national collection and on the fourth plinth. It’s been the magnet for demonstration and dissent; the backdrop for pomp and pageant; a destination for new arrivals, a muster point for soldiers’ last farewells. Bearing witness to this swirl of activity is the portico of  St Martin’s church, the four guardian lions and the elegant if little noticed High Commissions. Where else is so much of London’s past and present crammed into such a small space? Take this plunge into the life and times of our most amazing and remarkable square – once a  jumble of stables now a national treasure.
