As Londoners we have discovered some hidden gems in the city today and Shakespeare came to live for a moment with the wonderful story telling from our guide David! I brought my 12 yr old son with me and thought this would connect him more with the works of Shakespeare which he has to learn in English class and he liked the tour a lot! Nowadays lots of children do not enjoy the works of Shakespeare anymore, but if they would have a teacher or tour guide like David this would make a difference! So, thank you David for the wonderful tour and a thank you to our mayor Boris Johnson for offering free tours this weekend!! This was our first tour with London Walks and probably not my last.

Did this walk yesterday (March 29th) and was thoroughly entranced with every aspect of it, not least of all the guide, David, whom I cannot say enough good things about. He didn't simply guide, rather he involved us all in a couple hours of the discovery of a London that we never suspected existed. Bravo !

I just took your walk today, and really loved it! This is our third walk with you as a guide, David, and I can recommend you without reservation to anyone.

Keep up the great work.

I wasn’t expecting too much when I showed up for the Shakespeare & Dickens London Walk on Sunday, Sept. 7th, 2008 at 2pm. I was pleasantly surprised though. David reminded me of my favourite professors when I was in University. The ones who were deeply knowledgeable and passionate about their subject, appreciated the power of context, offered humorous, off-beat examples and brought the lives of the literary giants as close to their students as possible. Immediately after our first London Walk, my friend and I decided to go on another, and then another. We took the Cotswold & Oxford walk with Hilary on Wednesday and the Camden Town walk with Judy on Saturday. Hilary and Judy’s walks were as engaging as David’s, a testament to the consistency in quality of the London Walks. Thank you London Walks. We were thoroughly edu-tained.

Mary,

David here. You've set my London Walks tail wagging from breakfast to Christmas! So a sunburst of thanks!! And an extra one - a special one - for that new (to me) word: edu-tained!!!

In matters of this sort, it's all about the guide, and last year I had the great pleasure of being escorted round Shakespeare's and Dickens's London by Mr. David Tucker. First off, it was a glorious English summer's day - I still don't know how he did that - but more importantly, David knows his onions; more importantly still, he really knows his Shakespeare and his Dickens. Ignore that Wisconsin twang, the man attended University in England, earned a PhD in Dickens himself, and, having presumably misplaced his return ticket, has been hanging around looking for a proper job ever since. In possession, it would seem, of knowledge of the whereabouts every Victorian brick and Shakespearian rafter still in place from those glorious days of Empire, he will lead you through the labyrinth of the Old City, show you windows with bars on them prevent the likes of young Oliver Twist from crawling through, hidden courtyards where Elizabethan beams which survived the Great Fire can still be seen, all the while entertaining with genial banter of a Pickwickian nature, which can not fail to to inform and amuse. All in all, it is the sort of experience which must surely result in a strengthening of the moral fibre which binds together unimpeachable purpose and righteous act, honest intention and noble deed. In short, it's one hell of an afternoon.

Gavin,

David here. Whoa. And wow. All I can possibly add is I hope you had as much fun writing that as I did reading it! But seriously, thanks a bunch.

David was informative, entertaining & definitely good value. Unfortunately however, Casa di Caffe, didn't reach up to recommendation - the staff were disinterested and then unhelpful. When serving a cappucino my friend wasn't asked was size cup, but served a regular. When querying this the owner came up with a response that normally customers found small - not enough - and large - too much & therefore assumed she would like a regular! Quite an argument ensued & eventually a refund was given. That said, after the walk, we found an excellent cafe 'Tea' just round the corner at 1 Paternoster Sq.

Hi Christine,

David here. It goes without saying, I'm going to have a word with Mehran, the Manager there. He's a very nice guy - and the coffee shop is normally an absolute delight. So I just don't know - sure sounds like somebody there had an off-day. Anyway, whatever it was M. will get to the bottom of it and - I have no doubt at all - get it sorted.

Shakespeare's and Dickens' London tour 7th October 2007 - My brother and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour yesterday. David was a wonderfully entertaining guide who had many of us laughing. His application of knowledge to the surroundings was great and put things very much into perspective, having studied both authors work at school. We got to see some unexpectedly beautiful parts of London. I've lived in London for 3 and a half years and find this a wonderful, well priced way to explore the history of this city. I will definately be taking more of David's and other guides tours in the future.
