We do a walk there every Thursday. Isobel – award-winning Blue Badge Guide Isobel – is one of the guides who leads that walk. Here’s her introduction to the neighbourhood and to her walk. “Like most, probably all London neighbourhoods, Bermondsey has had its ups and downs. The area’s changed a lot, mostly for the better. It was a tight community, which didn’t always welcome outsiders. The police called the school I [Isobel] worked in ‘Fagin’s Nursery’.” So, royalty, docks, shipbuilding, shipbreaking, tanneries, cafes, foodies mecca, underworld, “desirable area” (as the estate agents describe it today).
