Let’s hear it for Immigrants’ London. London was founded by immigrants. It’s always been peopled by immigrants. Much of its greatness – let alone its buzz, its excitement, its astonishing bouquet of cultural, artistic, historical, linguistic, and, yes, culinary flavours – is attributable to its being a City of Immigrants. It’s a City of the Past in that regard.

And it’s also very much the City of the Future in that regard. London’s the most ethnically diverse city in the world.

And it works. Everybody rubs along together. People are what they are – this is the rainbow city. But they’re also, sooner or later, all Londoners. It’s part of the alchemy, part of the magic of London, that. This walk explores all of that. The whys? The wheres? The whens? The hows? The whos? The significance. Not just what it portends – but what’s to be admired and celebrated and indeed learned from that arguably richest strand of all in the London tapestry. N.B. the walk takes about two hours and ends at Aldgate Tube.

  1. Debbie

Sue was a great guide for this fantastic walk. She was able share her extensive knowledge, to bring this area’s history alive. Walking off the main tourist route we were able to see and learn about buildings we would have otherwise missed. Well paced, with lots of opportunity to ask questions and explore, I would highly recommend this fascinating tour – thank you, Sue.

  2. Susie

Sue has so much great information to share and so many interesting stories about the area but at times it was difficult to hear her and follow it all. She spoke quickly and did not especially project so even though it was a small group of 10 I found it hard even with good hearing especially in the second hour and missed bits which ws frustrating; my husband who has hearing aids had to stand right in front of her to follow and gave up towards the end. I noticed others on the tour were also having the same experience. I would recommend this walk because of the rich subject but we have been on many London Walks with guides with better delivery which has made them more enjoyable.

  3. Brian Altchuler

I went on the Melting Pot walk with Sue yesterday. I found it very interesting, discovering parts of London that were new to me, as well as revisiting some more familiar places. The walk tells the history of immigrants to this part of London, mainly Huguenots, Jews and Bengalis. Sue pointed out relevant places of interest and had come prepared with photos/pictures. I would recommend that you join her.
