Welcome to Elizabethan London. To Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. To the Bankside district – the world of Shakespeare in Love. Home to the Globe Theatre, old and new, and the other Elizabethan playhouses and bear-baiting dens and the Golden Hinde (that Elizabethan ship of ships) and the Bishop of Winchester’s palace (dear me, was Shakespeare ever scathing about that poor wretch and the local “pies” he had his grubby fingers in) and the stews (the Elizabethan street of brothels) and St. Saviour’s where he buried his brother Edmund and an ancient, swaybacked coaching inn in whose courtyard Shakespeare’s plays are still performed. And a bonus – there’s also cobbled, echoing Clink Street threading between brick cliffs of warehouses where bars of sunlight probe the shadows…yes, this is also the London of Charles Dickens’s troubled boyhood. The London that formed him – and which haunted him to his dying day.

Another bonus – the big one – this walk’s guided by an established, well-respected actor, Shaughan Seymour (you’ll have seen him on the big screen and the box). So you don’t get just guiding – this walk is also performed. Well performed, professionally performed – real acting, not cringe-making ham acting.

SHAKESPEARE’S BANKSIDE – THE PRACTICALS

The Shakespeare’s Bankside walk takes place at TBA on TBA. The meeting point for the Shakespeare’s Bankside walk is just outside the Fish Street Hill exit of Monument Tube. The walk ends very near London Bridge Station.
