N.B. Location, location, location. The meeting point for London’s Spymasters is St. James’s Park Underground Station, (Broadway/Petty France exit) – just along from that mother lode of history, the five-star Conrad Hotel (here’s Conrad Confidential, a tasty podcast about the Conrad – yet another reason for going on this walk).

There was a guy with a gun – aka get to know your guide

And this podcast makes three. It’s a sneak preview of this Walk. Picture Dan in Horse Guards Parade, spinning the yarn of Operation Mincemeat, weaving in the James Bond connection, and – for good measure – getting tantalisingly close to unmasking the real 007.

Step into the shadows of Westminster and discover covert locations where spies, assassins and duplicitous double agents plied their trade. Visiting the smartest corners of London, we peer into a murky world marked by treason and treachery, betrayal and murder.

From the wartime HQ of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) to the exceptionally discreet apartment of C, (‘M ‘in the Bond films), we walk in the footsteps of officers and agents who shaped history. Some of them managed Enigma – WWII’s greatest secret; others deviously created the biggest deception operation of the war.

AND WHILE WE’RE AT IT, MEET YOUR GUIDE

MORE ON THE WALK…

Some planned covert Cold War actions, a few gave away information on all of the above and one or two recently revealed GCHQ’s modern-day London secrets.

Stylised noir illustration for London’s Spymasters featuring a shadowy spy figure, secret dossiers, coded documents and the London skyline.

A murky world of treason, treachery, betrayal and murder. London’s hidden espionage landscape reimagined as a bold, deliberately stylised spy-thriller illustration.

Visiting shadowy locations that are rarely seen, we pass Ian Fleming’s wartime office, the glamorous house once used by SIS as a recruitment centre and the beautiful garden that witnessed an ugly assassination. Guided by Dan Parry

“For decades to come the spy world will continue to be the collective couch where the subconscious of each nation is confessed.” – John le Carre

Vintage-style classified Secret Intelligence Service dossier on a wooden desk, with aged folders, fountain pen and old map visible around the edges.

Classified Security File, Secret Intelligence Service. Artificially-created spy-thriller illustration evoking the covert world of London’s intelligence services.

  1. Chris

Dan was great! Very knowledgeable and welcomed questions. I purchased one of his books and am looking forward to reading it on the plane home. We have taken walking tours all over and Dan was top notch!

  2. Astrid and Johann

Excellent walking tour. Dan brought the buildings we would have ignorantly walked pass aelive with his spymaster storytelling. Very enjoyable.

  3. C Grisham

I took a lot of the excellent London Walks during my month spent in the city, but Dan’s were my favorite. He’s personable and his knowledge base on this subject is as encyclopedic as it is spellbinding. He’s a true expert on all things British intelligence- and he makes the two hours fly by! Thanks Dan!

  4. Cathy Psaros

Dan was so interesting. We learned much more than we expected. The walk was easy and touring Westminster on the ONLY sunny day in the 8 we were in London was a treat. I knew so many names from history classes but had long forgotten their significance. Do this tour! It is excellent.

  5. Cathy Psaros

Such much more fascinating than expected!

  6. Tony

Great guided walk. Dan was audible and well informed, with plenty of interesting stories about the mostly anonymous buildings which you wouldn’t look twice at, normally, but which featured in important world events.

  7. Yvonne Mckenzie

Interesting tour, Dan is an excellent guide. We found the tour to be knowledgeable and engaging start to finish.Dan was Passionate, enjoyable and informative.

  8. Diane

Interesting tour with lots of unknown to me information about the spy world! Dan has a wealth of knowledge & is eager to share it. As a bonus, the tour goes through some beautiful areas of London. Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy a few hours of fascinating history.

  9. Andrew Oliver

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Dan is a tremendous guide who through his stories and genuine interest and knowledge on the subject brings it all to life for you. Excellent !

  10. Hans Obma

Hands down, this is the best tour I have ever been on. Dan Perry–a respected BBC journalist and author–guides this tour. His insight meant the thread of the tour never broke–intrigue persisted and surprise abounded. He depicted the spies to us, and we walked the literal steps they walked. If MI6, the Cambridge 5, or John Le Carre are of interest to you, then mark your calendar for this once-a-month walk. If you need to take the day of work, do so. This is what I wanted to know about the history of spies.
