Arriving as the prize of winning Mastermind New Zealand 1979 (special subject: rock music), Mark fell in love with London and has lived here ever since, some of that time near Trafalgar Square as a neighbour of Benjamin Franklin (hey, what’s two centuries between friends…).
His has been a 30-year career as player/manager of the Bollywood Brass Band, the UK’s first Indian wedding brass band, playing in 25 countries across five continents. He’s now returned to his original field of economics and a lifelong love of history, to explore the development of commerce, science and politics in London in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Mark’s fascinated by this time and place, when a single person might combine inventing new instruments (musical or astronomical or microscopic), developing the sash window, designing buildings, and biological investigations; or capturing lightning, describing the Gulf Stream – and signing the American Declaration of Independence.
