He is an expert on historic hotels and the golden age of travel – and shares his knowledge on TV and radio. His latest book is Brown’s Hotel: A Family Affair, the definitive history of London’s oldest luxury hotel. His favourite year is 1869: think Suez Canal, transcontinental railway, Cutty Sark, Innocents Abroad and Thomas Cook’s first excursion to Egypt. What’s yours?
