“History, with its flickering lamp, stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scene, to revive its echoes and to kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days.”

Winston Churchill’s words perfectly encapsulate this VE Day walk. The walk is a journey through one of the most significant moments in modern history: Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day.

On the 8th of May 1945 the Second World War in Europe officially came to an end. It marked a turning point not just for Europe but for the world, as the dark shadow of conflict began to lift and hope for a brighter future emerged.

This BBC-featured walk is commanded by Army veteran Caroline Mongan. Caroline leads from the front – “I’ll take the point, follow me.”

To truly appreciate the magnitude of VE Day, it is important to understand the road that led to this historic moment. On this walk will be uncovering the important locations in London that were significant to VE-Day.  We will visit the London square where the nerve-centre of operation for the war was; where the allied team and Eisenhower planned the D-Day invasion which was the “beginning of the end” and led to ultimate victory.  We will learn about the build up to D-Day, the subterfuge deployed to foil the enemy; the fake news leaked.  We will hear about the remarkable lives and eccentric ideas of some of the boffins working behind the scenes to ensure victory.  We will hear how the contribution of the brave SOE and French Resistance help ensure Allied success.  We will come to understand Churchill’s involvement in this momentous occasion.  To finish we will hear how VE-Day was celebrated in the heart of London, as we all came together to rejoice with a sense of unity and shared triumph that was clearly palpable.

As we walk we will reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom, the resilience of those who endured the hardships of war, and the enduring legacy of VE Day. Each step we take is a tribute to the courage, determination, and hope that defined that remarkable moment in history.

Caroline is my favourite tour guide, so personable and funny!

A hugely informative tour, Caroline is so passionate about what she does.

Despite it being quite a big group, Caroline has a very niche way of being so inclusive and making an effort to chat to every single person.

Caroline is extremely clever, knowledgeable and most importantly kind.

Thoroughly enjoyed this walk and already looking to book my next walk with her!
