Short version. Isle of Dogs – roller coaster of a ride. Well, walk.

Long version. Isle of Dogs – 800 acre tongue of land jutting into the Thames opposite Deptford and Greenwich. History like so many tree rings. West India Docks made it an island in 1802. Pungent name dates from the early 1600s. Earlier it was Stepney Marshes (there were attempts to drain it way back in the 12th century). Docks, industry, housing, toll roads – in so many ways this was the engine room of London. Lost its way. Found its way. Regeneration was a flagship project for Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. Today, there’s no other place like it in London. Northern part of the Isle of Dogs – you’d think you were in the business district of a modern American city. Southern part’s an uneasy fusion of typical East End terraces and upmarket waterfront apartments. There was a lot of there there, there’s still a lot of there there. Guided by Stephanie.

LONDON WALKS PRIVATE WALKS

If you can't make one of the regularly scheduled, just-turn-up, public Isle of Dogs walks do think about booking one as a private tour. If you go private you can have the Isle of Dogs Walk – or any other London Walk – on a day and at a time that suits your convenience. We'll tailor it to your requirements. And – always with private London Walks and tours – we go to great lengths to make sure the guide-walker(s) "fit" is well-nigh perfect. Ring Fiona or Noel or Mary on 020 7624 3978 or email us at london@walks.com and we'll set it up and make it happen for you. A private London Walk – they're good value for an individual or couple and sensational value for a group – makes an ideal group or educational or birthday party or office (team-building) or club outing. Or indeed a fab present – be it a birthday or anniversary or get-to-know-your-new neighbourhood gift or Christmas present or whatever. Merchandise schmerchandise (gift wrapped or not) – but giving someone an experience, now that's special. Memories make us rich.
