And boy are we there. October 31st is all hands on deck as far as ghostbusters and attendant ghoulies are concerned.
Which is by way of saying, we’ll be running  special ghost walks on Halloween night; and pretty much every London Walks ghost walk guide is out strutting his or her (and their, i.e., the ghosts’!) stuff. That’s because London Walks’ Halloween ghost walks have become part of the “fabric” of London. Understandably so because they’re fun (a lot of the walkers will be in costume, as indeed will many of the guides!) and it is Halloween after all. All of which is by way of saying, the Halloween Ghost Walks are very popular – which is why we put several guides on in order to split the hordes up into smaller groups! In marked contrast, I hasten to add, to the 300 or more people who will get the annual cattle herd treatment from a couple of the knock-offs.

At night the ancient City is deserted. And eerie. Exploring its shadowy back streets and dimly lit alleys we might be in a medieval citadel, in overpowering stone. The very street names – Aldersgate, Cloth Fair, Charterhouse, Threadneedle – take us far back. We’re alone… Or are we? For this is the hour when the She-Wolf of France glides through the churchyard, the hour when the dark figure on Newgate wall rattles his chains, the hour when the Black Nun keeps her lonely vigil, and something inexpressibly evil lurks behind a tiny window. We’re on their trail… Or are they shadowing us? “How easy it is to awaken the unwanted attention of things that should sleep quietly in their tombs or hiding places…”  Guided by the Duke of Darkness or the Shadow Walker or the Woman in Black.

    A night on the “Ghosts of the Old City Walking Tour” with Adam proved to be an enchanting and memorable experience. From the moment the tour began, it was evident that Adam had a captivating presence and a genuine passion for storytelling.
    As we gathered in the dimly lit streets near the site of the former Newgate Prison, Adam immediately set the tone with his theatrical flair, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation and a hint of spookiness. His storytelling was not just informative; it was a performance, complete with dramatic pauses, a lowering of the voice, and *BANG* a stomp of the foot to make the group jump and giggle.
    Adam seamlessly wove together historical facts with local folklore, bringing the past to life in a way that held the group’s attention throughout the tour. His vivid descriptions and animated delivery made it easy to visualize the scenes he painted, making the ghostly tales feel like a journey through time.
    One of the highlights was Adam’s ability to prompt the audience to think about what may have been the actual origins of the ghost stories he was sharing. He had some real bangers I wish I’d written down. “That’s the thing about hysteria… at some point you feel stupid if you don’t join in.” He encouraged interaction between stops and kept an eye on the crowd so we did not end up wandering the dark streets of London alone on a Sunday night.
    By the end of the evening, it was apparent that Adam had not only provided a fascinating glimpse into the supernatural history of the London’s Old City but had also left a lasting impression on the participants. The tour was not just about ghosts; it was a masterful blend of storytelling, history, and entertainment, making it a positive and memorable experience for all who dared to join the journey into the haunted past. Also at £15, it is easily the cheapest way to spend 2 hours awake in London.

    We had a bone chillingly, ghoulish time of it! What an absolute blast the ghosts of the old city tour was. I consider myself a bit of a history buff, but discovered lots of new information delivered so wittily and entertainingly by Adam. Wholeheartedly recommend. Already looking at booking another!
