Short read: “If walls could speak…”

Long read: This wall does. Speak. When you learn how to “read” it, that is. Why and where and when and how it was built? What its different courses and strata are? They tell us as much about a city and its history as the rings of a tree speak of its age and what it’s lived through. And to ask – and answer – other questions is to open up still more vistas. Where’s the stone from? How’d they get it here? What does a mighty stone wall girdling a quarry-less city proclaim about it – and the people who built it? Wall (including that “unknown” bit – unknown because it’s underground), gates, fort, extramural London, the works – to walk it is to get a unique feel for London and its history. I walked the London Wall – that’s some stuff to strut. N.B. the walk takes about two hours and ends at St. Botolph’s Aldersgate, a five-minute walk from St. Paul’s Tube.

    This walk – and I’ve done a lot of London Walks – is special. It covers the vast London history beginning with Rome in an easy stroll through the not so famous parts of the City of London. Connecting place names with historic periods, intersecting modern life with ancient. Isobel’s enthusiasm and vast knowledge of the City makes this walk. If I were to recommend one walk for someone with a short time in London, I would hope this one was on offer.
