Hip, Happening, Handsome, Hi! Highbury

Highbury & Islington tube station, London

Guided by Philip

Reviewing a smorgasbord of local achievements, we discover the origins of Crufts, the haunt of gymnasts and tightrope walkers and how one company shaped our modern lives through the development of radio, TV and radar. A trip around Highbury would be bereft without discussing Arsenal and we end by appreciating the green fields and remarkable architecture of middle-class London in the late 19th century. N.B. this walk has been rerouted because of the game at Emirates Stadium today. Guided by Philip

MEET YOUR LONDON WALKS GUIDE

Having been one of the country’s top Scrabble players for more than 30 years, Philip has the right words for all occasions. That's no idle boast – Philip's in the Guinness Book of Records as having won the National Scrabble Championship a record four times.

Philip left the corporate world in 2013 – he'd worked for the owners of Scrabble for more than 20 years, promoting and publicising the game. Vaulting over the "wall", he qualified as a guide for the Clerkenwell and Islington area in 2014. Currently, he is working on adding Westminster to his portfolio of guiding knowledge. He is particularly interested in sport and leads tours regularly at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and at Lords Cricket Ground. An enthusiast of all things historical, he also guides at St. John’s Gate Museum in Clerkenwell – home of the organisation most famous for starting the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. Modern sculpture is another interest and he leads a couple of tours around the City, highlighting some of the great works that can be seen there.

Philip is a born and bred Londoner who adores his home city. He has an individual take on guiding and, despite his love of history, he also likes to talk about more contemporary events and areas of interest and to encourage audience participation. On his Highbury tour – willing customers get to re-enact the denouement of Four Weddings and a Funeral in the street where it was filmed. His lively tours are not to be missed.
