Guided by Philip
Here's what Philip, the guide, wrote to us. Won me over instanta. There's no resisting it.
I'm a qualified guide for the Clerkenwell and Islington area. My most popular walk is 'Highbury – Grand houses and Grander Stadiums'. We have a lot of fun on this walk – we hear about a candidate for Jack the Ripper. His main recommendation seems to have been a malformation of the penis! We also get to re-enact the denouement of Four Weddings and a Funeral outside of the house where it was filmed. It ends with what one of my customers described as the cheesiest line ever in films, by Andie McDowell after a proclamation of love from a drenched Hugh Grant – 'Is it raining?'. I also get to talk about history, architecture and my favourite football team, including a chance encounter with Arsenal legend – Robert Pires, And there's even a short nature walk!
The Highbury – Grand Houses & Grander Stadiums walk takes place at 2.30 pm on Saturday, June 1 and at 2.30 pm on Sunday, July 28. Meet Philip just outside the exit of Highbury & IslingtonTube.

If you can't make the regularly scheduled, just-turn-up, public Highbury – Grand Houses & Grander Stadiums walk do think about booking one as a private tour. If you go private you can have the Highbury Walk – or any other London Walk – on a day and at a time that suits your convenience. We'll tailor it to your requirements. Ring Fiona or Noel or Mary on 020 7624 3978 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll set it up and make it happen for you. A private London Walk – they're good value for an individual or couple and sensational value for a group – makes an ideal group or educational or birthday party or office (team-building) or club outing.
A private London Walk makes a very special gift – be it a birthday or anniversary or Christmas present or whatever. Merchandise schmerchandise (gift wrapped or not) – but giving someone an experience, now that's special. Memories make us rich.
Having been one of the country’s top Scrabble players for more than 30 years, Philip has the right words for all occasions. That's no idle boast – Philip's in the Guinness Book of Records as having won the National Scrabble Championship a record four times.
Philip left the corporate world in 2013 – he'd worked for the owners of Scrabble for more than 20 years, promoting and publicising the game. Vaulting over the "wall", he qualified as a guide for the Clerkenwell and Islington area in 2014. Currently, he is working on adding Westminster to his portfolio of guiding knowledge. He is particularly interested in sport and leads tours regularly at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and at Lords Cricket Ground. An enthusiast of all things historical, he also guides at St. John’s Gate Museum in Clerkenwell – home of the organisation most famous for starting the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. Modern sculpture is another interest and he leads a couple of tours around the City, highlighting some of the great works that can be seen there.
Philip is a born and bred Londoner who adores his home city. He has an individual take on guiding and, despite his love of history, he also likes to talk about more contemporary events and areas of interest and to encourage audience participation. On his Highbury tour – willing customers get to re-enact the denouement of Four Weddings and a Funeral in the street where it was filmed. His lively tours are not to be missed.
