THE OLD UNIVERSITY QUARTER
Exploring London's Sorbonne

I didn't get a chance to thank Hilary for such a fascinating tour. I was still far too absorbed by the adornments and histories hidden within the cabinets at the Petrie Museum for Egyptology at UCL. What's worse is that I've lived in the neighbourhood for 21 years and hadn't a clue this museum - a true rival for the British Museum, was only around the corner. Then there were the dinosaurs at London's only museum of zoological history at UCL -what a delight and completely unexpected!

It's certainly the best two hours I've spent in ages. Thanks Hilary.

For years, I've been meaning to see Jeremy Bentham's autoicon and to go to the Petrie Museum, and here it all was on one walk!

This was the fourth walk I went on during this visit, and so far, it's my favorite. It's an unsung (well, undersung) gem. The emphasis is on architecture and museums. There is not as much solid history as on some walks, but there are lots of personalities and anecdotes.

N.B. When I went, the guide was Peter. He said he hadn't guided this particular walk for a long time, but it didn't show.

A fascinating walk and it was particularly interesting to hear the origins of the University College and Birkbeck College, especially as the former was my husband's old university. The museum visits were spectacular and the curator at the Eygptology museum was really enthusiastic, lively and knowledgeable. Many thanks.
