THE LONDON OF OSCAR WILDE

A really enjoyable morning spent in the company of Alan, a guide who clearly has a passionate interest in the life and times of Oscar Wilde. Anyone who claims to have purchased copies of Wilde's household invoices must have a real interest in his subject. Alan is perfect for the role of guide and was in character even before the tour started - when asked "are you doing the Oscar Wilde walk?" his reply was "If you insist". Classic! If you have the slightest interest in Wilde this walk is highly recommended.

I happen to love Victorian London and Oscar Wilde so naturally I loved this tour. What a perfect way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning in London! However even if you are not familiar with Wilde or his times (late Victorian Britain), the tour is worthwhile as you wander some fascinating and beautiful streets in St.James and Mayfair. That is the beauty of London Walks - you get to see side streets and by-ways of a London that you would never have found on your own. My favorite site of this walk was a frieze on a building which had Wilde's face (as well as Laurence Olivier's), that building was once the theater where Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" premiered in 1895. It made me long for a time machine to bring me back to Victorian gaslit London!

This was our first London walk, and it was a delight from start to finish. Alan is Oscar incarnate, complete with green carnation and theatrical aplomb. He didn't so much guide us as share his encyclopaedic knowledge of Wilde's life and work, complete with amusing anecdotes and witty asides. However, don't expect to walk very far. We never ventured more than five minutes from Green Park Tube stop!
