OLD WESTMINSTER - 1,000 Years of History
Andy Furnham - Cardiff, UK
March 2012
Been meaning to do this one for a while and finally got round to it. Shaughan was the man and pretty soon I could tell he was an actor, he looks nothing like Winston Churchill but his impressions were spot on. He was everything you would expect from a guide.

There are probably two parts of this walk. The first being about the buildings that most people know such as Parliament and Westminster Abbey. The history and stories to be told of such places could fill up a day but plenty gets crammed in to the time.

The second part is the back streets where if you took the cars away it could be 200 years ago. This bit I found totally fascinating and found myself longing for a time machine and to be able to talk to the walls. So even if you have been in the abbey and parliament and have a pretty good knowlege of Pugin etc the walk will still have plenty to offer.

The amount of walking is minimal and although we start in the busy streets it soon calms down. The fact that the weather was stunning on St Davids day was a bonus. If you are from abroad or the UK this walk is essential in my eyes as this must be one of the most historic areas on the planet.

I did a little research on my guide after and found he was even in one of my favourite Miss Marples with the amazing Joan Hickson. Quality.

A wonderful, informative, and enjoyable walk highlighting Westminster. David was knowledgeable, a gifted guide, and had a voice that projected well above the din of the traffic. We got a feel for this hub of London, and the UK. As promised, one of several photos of David leading our tour. If he would like additional photos, please get back to me.

Hi Alan,

David here. Writing from that fairy tale of a city - Prague! Thanks so much for your kind remarks. Would love to see the photo but it doesn't seem to have pitched up.

FYI, I've just this week finished writing the Secret Westminster chapter of the forthcoming London Walks book. Some - though by no means all - of what you saw (and heard) has found its way into it. Now there's a surprise. But I think you'll find some other bits in it - "connections", etc. - that will come as quite an agreeable surprise.

Even though I am pretty good at my history the walk with David was excellent. Clear, not too hurried and informative. It told me things that I had missed, even though I had walked past them hundreds of times, as a Londoner and things that I knew and thought he might miss. He was excellent and even spotted small details that many a guide might overlook.
